It's a rainy, sleepy sort of day. I don't often have a chance to browse through Etsy and look at things I might want to buy to wear, so I thought I would do a little post of things I might wear to together if...only I could!

My favorite colors for this spring are coral, mint, deep turquoise, rust, and white, with pops of golden yellow, and always cool grays.

The Apartment (1960)

We watched The Apartment last night starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine. I immediately caught on to this film's heavy influence on the Mad Men series, but more importantly, I fell in love with Shirley Maclaine's amazing style and her quirky personality to go with it. She's not just a woman in a man's world holding up an elevator. She's on her own level.

Well, she might have been one of the cutest and most stylish people I've ever seen...

This 1920s peter pan collar blouse immediately made me think of sipping a mint julep, giggles, and sneaky glares at the boy 4 bar stools away.

Fashion inspiration: casual fashions worn by women in the 1920s and 1930s, after school or work to the soda fountain- the sort of thing a gal might wear hoping to meet someone new and exciting...or just laugh off the day with the girls.

I couldn't help it. It's still very gray and frigid out there, but I am ready! I am so ready for being outdoors again. I know that I'm still going to be seeing snow on the ground through mid April, but I hope these things will cheer you up as they have me.

I've been meaning to share like a billion old photos of my grandparents. These photos make me REALLY excited and I have A LOT of them to share, and I admit I do think I have really attractive old relatives...good genes! Can you see the resemblance? ;)

I was going to put a few into a nice old collage, and I will do that one day for the blog...but for now, here are a few I picked for their lovely style relevancy.

A history lesson...

For Memorial Weekend, Liam and I along with my cousin Doc, Aunt Donna, Mother, Sisters Michelle, Christie, and my niece Kayla...took a tour through the past to visit some sites of significance to our family history. I learned a lot about my mom's side of the family that I did not know. It was really interesting, and the weather was beautiful! I had fun wearing my outfit and making Liam take lots of pictures!

Oh, and I had my hair cut and colored on Sat. in Little Italy. I LOVE it!

Dress: vintage dress from Etsy Mama Vintage c. late 30s-1940. (it was worn as a wedding dress sometime in probably the very early 40s.)

It's hard to tell, but those are little crochet heart pockets on the chest.

Vintage Coach bag: thrifted

Booties: Urban Outfitters (a long time ago.)

the family cemetery at dusk...most of these photos were equally creepy. this one kind of spooks me, but I really like how that sun is setting behind me, along with that fantastic Celtic cross.

She didn't want me to post these! (tehehee) Yesterday, we had a huge Mother's Day party at our house with the whole family. It was a really nice time. My sweet Aunt Donna passed out envelopes of old photographs she made up for each of us...

Here are a few I had never seen of my mom growing up & then raising my two older sisters, and graduating from nursing school.

Mom with sisters Michelle, & Chisty. (1970s) I love the blouse. That's very mom. She still likes to wear that sort of thing and thinks it's pretty hilarious that it is still somehow in style. I must mention that hair! I'm quite jealous...

Mom graduating from nursing school, with my Grandma Hellen. (1980s) she was pregnant with me at the time or perhaps I was just born. Adorable in her little hat, and uniform. Yes, that was 40s uniform style coming back into style in the 80s. She wore it up until I was about 13.She just liked the old style.

These are really wonderful and I'm glad to have them. I do feel closer to my mom having seen all these lives that she has lived...and she is still young! Not a gray hair on her head.

WOW!

Shortly after listing my 1940s oxfords from The Higbee Co. manufactured by E.P. Reed & Co. in Rochester N.Y. I was very happily surprised to be contacted by Beth at "The Shoe Factory Art Co-Op" now currently occupied in none other than the very building where my shoes were made by hand! How cool is that?!

Beth has done some research on the factory, and was kind enough to share some of the images she has uncovered which to me are truly fascinating!

It seems I'm the last to know anything about this crazy popular show on AMC. Well, I had to check it out with all the vintage blosphere gossip going around...I rarely watch T.V. to be honest. I really don't find time.

I watched my first episode the other night. I too was fascinated by all those sexy fashions.

I came across this little dress suit jacket set with a label on it that says none other than "Miss Madison New York" and maybe I squeeled a little. Too cute!

I think it is very "Peggy Olsen," don't you think?

1940s Italian Leather knee high boots. Only pair I've ever seen! Gorgeous 1940s shoes, I have, but beautiful boots like this don't come around.

Stunning unique 1950s Avant Garde fine wool suit. So lovely. A must see in person! As the story goes this came from a fantastic local vintage boutique shop a while back, that has since made its way to Chicago! (where it's dazzling those with finer taste than we can find in Cleveland, I'm sure.)

Also from the same shop, a 1940s Lord and Taylor GREEN pencil skirt! So classic! Such attention to details!

And this darling little 1950s bag that is just so interesting with all its shiny metal. It's pretty heavy for a little bag. I like the weight.

The front lawn is covered in golden slivers from the tree. The sun is just going down. It looks like a sort of gliter on the lawn. the cats are snuggled together on the couch. Dinner's in the oven. There are new seasonal items in the shop.

The Queen Has Arrived...

Oh dear, I saw her by accident while browsing dress forms on eBay to find a new one for my shop. Last year I had a newer one that I used to model bags and dresses that would not fit me, but in the process of moving twice...it was dismembered over a year ago and I have not seen all the parts since. Then to my good fortune...I came across this! It was unlike anything I've ever laid eyes on. I knew it was mine, made just for me, for Revival House...it had to be. I envisioned everything I could do with her, and how my new dream vintage boutique would be born. I set out at that moment to reinvent my shop not even knowing whether or not I would win the auction.

As the story goes, there were several people highly interested in her. The day I saw her on eBay, the auction closed with no bids because all of us had questions about how to reasonably afford freight shipping for a 75 lb claw foot base. It just so turned out that my address was the closest. Shipping arrangements were worked out, and it went back on eBay for one day for all of us to bid...and I expected all of us would bid like madness! BUT, to my luck, nobody showed up to bid other than myself. I couldn't believe it. I was willing to pay any amount to have her shipped. I will have her all my life, and I know nobody could appreciate her more.

She's paper-mache, and solid cast iron and painted many years ago a lovely white patina. Her proportions give a clue to when she might have been made, anywhere from mid 19th century to early turn of the century. This is my only guess because her proportions make it appear as though she was made to wear a corset. That is exactly what I thought when I first knew of her measurements. The hour glass figure stood out to me...the extremely narrow waist, but wider hips. Later on, I know the hips were more the concern, and girdles became more the fashion than corsets. Could that be a clue? I swear I go crazy about these things...

Country Pickin'

Liam and I visited the country this past week...to go antiquing, sweet treat eating, and maple syrup buying...

I've been going to this little town called Burton, since I was a little girl with my family. There used to be an old fashioned ice-cream parlor in the front of an enormous Victorian estate. It was called "The Same Place Too."

That has long since closed, but the ice-cream shop moved down the road and formed into a quaint little pizza parlor, so we eat there when we go...and save room for ice-cream, although I swear it's not hand-churned or anything like it used to be.

Oh well...

I have lots of fond memories of the way the area used to be. Some of the antiques stores are closed or are going up for sale now. But the buildings and old houses are always really neat to see. They also always have something really interesting going on, like amazing library sales, and Civil War enactments!

My dad and I used to love spending hours browsing all the cute little shops. My dad was wild about antiques. He was the one that taught me the precious value of old things. He was just fascinated by everything and had me wanting to ask lots of questions about history. My favorite childhood times were spent with my family in history museums, and antique shops across Ohio. Burton, Ohio will always have a special place in my heart, so we make the trip out whenever we can.

Meet Filmore & Mosely

These two little belly-up in the sun rascals are the behind the scenes little shop helpers...oh yes, they do a great deal of work for Revival House. They love to be in the photo shoots, and you might see one or two peeping a head or a tail in a picture. Mosely in particular loves all of my boxes...try packaging a pair of shoes for instance: I turn around for a moment and come back, and there I see two green eyes peeping out. I'm sure he's just all snuggly as can be in there ready to be shipped off to Peru...as long as he can keep the box!

Filmore is my shy sunny boy. He helps with stress. He likes to sneak in unassumingly and land himself on your lap, and take a nice long nap, like "Sure, I do this all the time, and you never seem to mind anyway."

Hooray for kitties! Tell me about yours or your other pets behind the scenes if you like. I love all pets.

A Bomber For Balaika In Belgium

I've been meaning to post a little blog note about dear Annette in Belgium who was so thoughtful in sending me a photo of her wearing a really neat rugged leather bomber jacket she purchased from my shop over the winter. I was so pleased to see the jacket go forth on a new adventure in a beautiful land-to be loved by a lovely new owner. I was so happy to hear back from her recently, and I asked if I could place her photo in the blog. She said, yes. Hooray!

I don't know if this dress will make it into the shop. I'm thinking that I will see if anyone dares that they can fit into it other than myself. If it does not sell in a month or so, it will go back into my closet. It fits me like a glove, but I know that I'm abnormally tiny...but here I think I look like a little porcelain doll?

Very First Post!

My name is Chelsea. I live with my handsome, Liam and our two silly cats. Their names are Filmore & Mosely. We live in an old house built in 1928, in the vicinity of Coventry Village in Cleveland Heights Ohio.

I have been in love with vintage clothing for as long as I can remember. I know, that's what everyone who loves vintage seems to say, but it's true. I remember driving around Cleveland with my stylish Gram Helen and my mom in my gram's old olive green car. I don't remember what kind of car it was, but it was something from the '70s. It was her first and only car. She learned to drive in her 40s. She was the most stylish woman I've ever personally known. She always raved about meeting Elvis when she was young and 'really somethin.' Oh, she was a hoot!

So we would go out to the 'antique district' in Lakewood to hit all the great shops. Some were snooty and overpriced, but some were really great. I would try on shoes and dresses and ask my mom to buy plenty of them. I wish I still had some of my little old dresses. I remember a white eyelet mini dress that I wanted more than anything but it had a stain, so my mom bought it and we put salt and lemon juice on it and sat it out in the sun. It magically came out like new.

Selling vintage clothing wasn't maybe what I thought I would be doing at this point in my life. I thought I'd be off at Bard College, studying literature, and creative writing. (I consider myself to be a writer above all else. My poetry is very profuse.) BUT...my heart changed course, and the money wasn't there. I can say though that I am glad that I am doing what I'm doing. I'm reminded daily of my little but important impact on the world--giving garments new life, a new set of memories, a new set of lives to be cherished and remembered.
